Chairman - Centre for Thoracic and Cardio
Vascular Care |
The MIOT - CTCC is
a referral centre both nationally and internationally, for
complex heart surgeries.
The primary
mission of MIOT - CTCC is to deliver high quality cardio
vascular care. A highly qualified medical team and
sophisticated equipment make this centre an excellent
choice. We take pride in our accurate diagnosis aided by
state-of- he-art investigations. Each patient is
individually evaluated and a mode of treatment planned.

An exhaustive
preoperative consultation between the doctor, patient and
his/her relatives ensures the best care till the patient is
discharged. Great attention is taken to see that every
patient is advised on all measures to be taken after
discharge.

This Centre
performs more than 1000 surgeries annually with a success
rate matching international; benchmarks. Being one of
the best-equipped heart surgical units in India, our
operating theatre and surgical ICU are sophisticated and
have the most sterile environment ensuring near zero
infection which bests even international centres.
The most
frequently performed operation here is CABG. The
morality for primary isolated coronary artery bypass
surgery is less than 0.3%, well below the benchmark set
by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (USA). Many patients
are referred to us for second or third time surgeries,
which are definitely more complex in nature. A good
percentage of surgeries are performed on elderly
patients and patients with additional complications
generally considered inoperable.
Latest state-of-the-art Surgeries
1. Off Pump – Beating Heart Surgery
Beating
heart surgery is a revolutionary technique in bypass
surgery. The procedure offers distinct advantages
|
 |
No requirement
of blood transfusion |
|
 |
Up to 30%
savings in costs over conventional bypass surgery |
|
 |
Minimal stay in
ICU and hospital |
|
 |
Minimized
chances of infection |
|
 |
Faster rate of
recovery |
This
procedure is a boon to patients classified as high risk,
due to old age related lung diseases, kidney failure,
poor pumping capacity of the heart, etc.
Beating
Heart Surgery can be performed only by competent
surgeons supported by an experienced team. MIOT is one
of the leading and best hospitals for undergoing Beating
Heart Surgery where this surgery is performed in 98% of
the cases which comes to us.
2.
Arterial Grafting for Bypass Surgery
At MIOT we
use the patient’s own artery (IMA) for bypass. This
gives the patient an excellent long-term result without
subsequent blockage in the bypassed vessels. Use of
multiple arterial grafts is a technical challenge.
3.
Endoscopic vein harvesting from the legs for CABG
When leg
veins are used for bypass in some patients we use a
keyhole incision to remove the vein from the leg. This
helps the patient recover faster
Heart valve
leakage results from malfunction of one or more valves.
In such a condition the heart has to work harder to
deliver oxygen rich blood around the body. The
overworked heart may begin to fail, causing shortness of
breath, pain, tiredness and build up of fluid in the
body. If this happens the valve may have to be replaced
or repaired. If the vale is replaced, patients have to
take life long blood thinning medications.
This is not
the case of the valve is repaired. The surgical team at
MIOT has extensive experience in mitral valve repair –
more than 300 operations with 99% success rate. MIOT is
one of the few hospitals in the country performing this
surgery.
5. Aortic
Aneurysm Surgery
One of the
most challenging areas for a surgeon is aortic aneurysm
surgery. Our Centre is one of the preferred referral
centres for Aortic Aneurysm repair in India.
|
Aneurysm is a bulge or swelling in the artery that has been
weakened by disease or injury. The danger is that it may
rupture causing internal bleeding that could be fatal. It is
a condition where surgery is very complex and difficult. In
certain procedures the patient’s blood temperature is
brought down to 15degree and blood circulation is stopped.
On reaching this stage the procedure has to be performed
within 45 minutes.

Aneurysm Stenting through Keyhole |
|
Endovascular Grafting – A new technique without Open Surgery |
Here the
aortic aneurysm is treated through keyhole surgery. A
graft is introduced through a hole in the thigh into the
area of the aneurysm. This procedure will take only
about an hour and the patient can go home in 3 days.
Endovascular Grafting is done only in very few centres
in India and MIOT is one of the leaders and the best
hospital in it. At MIOT, Dr.Bashi and his team have
successfully treated more than 250 aortic aneurysms both
surgically and with endovascular grafting.

MIOT has
started a training centre for endovascular procedures at
METAA. This centre trains surgeons from all parts of
South East Asia.
Hybrid Procedures for Complex
Aortic Aneurysm
This
combined procedure involves the cardiovascular surgeon
and endovascular intervention list. This is performed in
the cath lab cum theatre suite with high tech imaging
facilities.

Chairman and Chief Surgeon. He has performed many complex
surgeries including valve repairs and replacements,
correction of congenital anomalies, vascular and pulmonary
operations and over 5000 coronary By-pass surgeries.
He is credited for performing extensive thoracic aortic
aneurysm for the first time in the country. This surgery
involves total replacement of thoracic aorta including
aortic valve. |
He is also
one of the pioneers of Beating Heart Surgery in India
having performed over 1500 beating heart bypass
surgeries with a success rate of 99.5 % - one of the
highest in the world.
