MIOT Institute of Nephrology has been founded by
a team of doctors headed by one of the leading
Nephrologists of the country Dr.Rajan Ravichandran.

Dr.Rajan Ravichandran has 30 years of experience
in treating patients with various kidney
ailments including general nephrology, dialysis
and kidney transplants. He has treated more than
20,000 patients from all over India and neighbouring countries like Maldives, Srilanka,
Malaysia and Bangladesh. |

Dialysis Unit
MIOT Institute of Nephrology has state-of-the-art Dialysis
Unit which caters to around 65 patients per day. The
haemodialysis unit is well supported by a trained
technologist, has one of the best water treatment plants and
is supervised by a trained Medical Officer. We take care to
boost our patients’ morale by maintaining a cheerful
ambience in the dialysis unit. Since its inception this
institute has performed around 27,000 dialysis.
The dialysis unit also provides a private room for
patients who want to get dialyzed in private. |

Procedures
The unit
performs AV Fistula, AV Grafts, Perm catheter, temporary
femoral (or) subclavion or Jugular access and percutaneous
catheter insertion for CAPD for patients requiring various
mode of dialysis. The Department houses a dedicated
Nephrology ICU for patients who are critical ill with kidney
disease.
Kidney Transplants
The Department of Transplant and Immunology, a
sub unit of the MIOT Institute of Nephrology has the
expertise to provide the best Kidney Transplant programme.
The unit has experience in handling transplants and problems
arising from them, for over many decades. The success rate
of a transplant here is comparable to the best in the world
today. |

Renal transplantation at MIOT
hospitals
So far 214 kidney transplantations have been done at
MIOT Hospitals, since June 2008.
The department also provides supportive care to
critically ill patients who might be in need of a
special dialysis called CRRT - Continuous Renal
Replacement Therapy. Only few centres in India have
this specialized form of dialysis. Procedures like
Plasmapheries and Haemo filtrations are also performed
along with specialized diagnostic procedures like
kidney biopsy, cyst aspiration & angioplasty.

Academic Programmes
The MIOT Institute of Nephrology is all set to start
academic programmes for both graduates and medical
graduates. The aim is to train “barefoot nephrologists”
who will practice in rural areas, so that kidney
diseases can be detected at an early stage and referred
to higher institutions.

The unit has
ongoing research in producing resins which remove various
toxins from the body. This will delay/replace dialysis. |

MIOT Hospitals
has been the pioneer in India to start
Kidney
Transplant across Blood Groups using the Japanese
technology. The first such transplantation was done from a B
group donor to O group recipient four years ago. Several
such transplantations across different combinations of blood
groups have been done successfully so far. The donors and
patients who have undergone such transplantations were
honoured during the
World
Kidney Day, 2012. For the first time in the country
the data of such transplantations has been published
scientifically in the Journal of Kidney Transplantation. |

Sparce Surgery for kidney tumor will also be starting
shortly. This surgery will remove only the tumour and
preserve the kidney. |
