“In 40 years of
professional life, I’ve had one overwhelming desire. That the
people in my country should be able to enjoy the same
standards of professional health care that is taken for
granted in the west. Today is a happy day because that dream
has been realized”
The passionate involvement of the renowned Orthopaedician,
Padmashri Prof. Dr. P.V.A. Mohandas in his profession
and his undeterred vision saw him accomplish his mission,
viz. the translation of his dreams into reality. Backed by
35 years of experience in Joint Replacement surgery and 45
years of professionalism in the field of Orthopaedic
Medicare in India and Europe, Dr. P.V.A. Mohandas has
ceaselessly endeavoured to make MIOT the only truly Global

needs no introduction in the field of Medicine and Surgery
in India, is considered as the Father of Modern
Orthopaedic Surgery in India. He brought into
India the new AO concept of Fracture fixation and Joint
Replacement surgery. His tenure as Professor of Orthopaedics
at Kilpauk Medical College and Government Royapettah
Hospital earned him the fond appreciation as 'Teacher of

They say from a
small acorn grows a mighty oak and that’s true for MIOT too.
It grew from the seed in the mind of one man. That man was
Prof. Dr. P.V.A. Mohandas, the proud Founder of MIOT
Hospitals.
Early Ages
Prof. Dr. P.V.A.
Mohandas was born in 1934 in a small town of Tirunelveli
district of Tamil Nadu. After doing MBBS from Madras Medical
College (MMC), Chennai, he worked as Assistant Professor of
Surgery at Stanley Medical College, Chennai. In the same
college, he worked as an assistant to neurosurgeon and later
orthopaedics. Later, he pursued MS in Orthopaedics from MMC.
In 1969, Dr Mohandas went to University of Liverpool,
England to do M Ch (Ortho). He later worked in University of
Tubingham, Germany. In 1974, he returned to India and joined
MMC. He served for 15 years as a Professor of Orthopaedics
in MMC and Kilpauk Medical College, Chennai.
He decided to create it
Over the years as
a physician Prof. Dr. P.V.A. Mohandas could not find the
ideal environment for healthcare in India. This made him
shift to the private sector where he started his private
practice in Vijaya Hospital, Chennai.
When the number of
his patients at Vijaya Hospital started proliferating, he
started the Madras Institute of Orthopaedics and
Traumatology (MIOT), as an independent entity at Vijaya
Hospital in 1988. His aspirations for growth nurtured the
dream of building a state-of-the-art hospital in India that
he noticed in European countries. "Because you create your
dreams, you can make your dreams come true," he says.
In 1999, MIOT
moved to a 14-acre premise at Manapakkam, Chennai.

commercial arm. Its main aim is to promote friendship,
comradeship and collaboration between Indian and German
Orthopaedic Surgeons by training young orthopaedic doctors,
promote fellowship training at Germany and unite the IGOF
members in both India and Germany.
