Thyroid Disease Clinic
At Thyroid clinic, we routinely manage thyroid
conditions like Hypothyroidism, Hyperthyroidism,
Thyroid Nodule, Thyroid Malignancies and congenital
and juvenile Hypothyroidism.
The usual symptoms of thyroid hormone insuffiiciency
(hypothyroidism) may include
|
 |
Weight gain |
|
 |
Puffy face and
swollen feet |
|
 |
Constipation |
|
 |
Slowing down in
work |
|
 |
Unexplained
fatigue |
|
 |
Intolerance to
cold |
Thyroid hormone excess (Hyperthyroidism) may present
as
|
 |
Weight loss |
|
 |
Excessive
sweating |
|
 |
Restlessness |
|
 |
Anxiety and
sleep disturbance |
|
 |
A fast heart
rate |
|
 |
Loose stools |
|
 |
Dislike for hot
weather |
Thyroid tumors may present as
|
 |
Enlarging neck
(thyroid) swelling |
|
 |
Change in voice
|
|
 |
Difficulty in
swallowing |
Hypothyroidism in children may manifest as
|
 |
Slow growth |
|
 |
Poor school
performance |
|
 |
Delayed pubertal
development |
Supplementary laboratory facilities for a sensitive
thyroid hormone assay and antibody studies
complement our Thyroid services.
Thyroid sonography and Fine Needle Aspiration
Cytology of thyroid nodules are done routinely. We
are aided by a very experienced pathologist who
provides accurate FNAC reports , which facilitates
timely and effective intervention. MIOT has an
excellent Nuclear Medicine Facility for Diagnosis
and Ablation Therapy in Thyroid diseases. MIOT also
has a skilled surgical team for handling thyroid
tumours and other benign thyroid conditions.
Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Disease Clinic
Osteoporosis is very common among the postmenopausal
women and those taking steroidal medications for
arthritis, obstructive airway disease and other
medical conditions. Osteoporosis when unrecognized
and left untreated may lead to debilitating
consequences including vertebral and hip fractures .
The morbidity and mortality due to these
complications almost equal that of cardiovascular
diseases.
Also, vitamin D deficiency and osteomalacia are very
common in India and many other parts of the world.
Metabolic bone diseases may present with
|
 |
Low backache |
|
 |
Unexplained
weakness |
|
 |
Body aches
|
|
 |
Fractures due to
trivial trauma |
|
 |
Recurrent kidney
stones |
|
 |
Bony swellings |
A comprehensive evaluation and treatment for
metabolic bone diseases is available at MIOT
hospitals. We routinely do Vitamin D, parathyroid
hormone assays , NTx and other parameters pertaining
to bone mineral metabolism , which help in detection
of metabolic bone diseases. We have also evaluated
and successfully cured many persons with parathyroid
hormone excess by medical and surgical treatments.
Ready availability of the latest BONE DENSITOMETRY
service helps us in early detection and successful
treatment of deforming conditions like Osteoporosis,
Metabolic Bone Disease and Parathyroid Disorders.
Obesity
Obesity is fast increasing in prevalence among both
adults and the children. Obesity in long term can
lead to many diseases including heart attacks,
diabetes, osteoarthritis, obstructive sleep apnoea,
uncontrolled blood pressure elevation and even some
cancers. Obesity may be due to several reasons
including genetic disorders, hormonal disorders and
excess calorie intake coupled with a sedentary life.
A combination of diet restriction, daily exercise
and medications are effective in many persons.
However, those who have severe obesity will require
surgical procedures including gastric banding
(bariatric surgery). Bariatric surgery may also
almost cure diabetes in these obese persons.
We offer comprehensive diagnostic facilities for
finding the cause for obesity. We have a effective
dietary program for obesity. Also, we have recorded
good results with bariatric surgery done by a very
skilled surgical team.

Resistant Hypertension
Recent reports suggest that hormone excess
(excess of aldosterone and catecholamines)may account for
upto 10 % of prevalent Hypertension (high blood pressure).
Especially the following group of persons should undergo
evaluation for hormonal excess
|
 |
Those having
hypertension while still young (eg. 35 years of age) |
|
 |
Those with
difficult to control hypertension |
|
 |
Those who
require 3 or more medications to control BP |
|
 |
Those having
sudden on & off rise in BP |
|
 |
Those having
significant weight gain or weight loss along with high BP |
|
Excess
aldosterone level may be caused by enlarged adrenal
gland or by a small discrete tumour in adrenal
gland. This type of high BP can be completely
controlled by proper drugs. In many cases, surgical
removal of the small adrenal tumour results in cure
of high BP. Excess catecholamines are secreted by
tumours called pheochrocytomas. We offer
comprehensive biochemical and radiological
investigations to find out causes for difficult-to-
control blood pressure. Many persons with such
problems have been diagnosed and successfully
treated.
Gynaecologic Endocrinology
Common endocrine problems in women like
irregular and infrequent menstrual cycles, excess
facial and body hair growth, primary and secondary
infertility and menopausal symptoms are evaluated
and treated successfully.
Paediatric Endocrinology
Growth Disorders, Hypothyroidism and
Premature and Delayed Puberty are some of the common
disorders in children for which optimum treatment is
available.
Pituitary Disorders
The availability of the 1.5 TESLA MRI and
availability of hormone assays of Pituitary hormones
in MIOT, facilities treatment of Pituitary tumours,
Hypopituitarism and Prolactin disorders. We
regularly interact with the Neurosurgical Department
for surgical support.
