Obesity

Obesity is fast increasing in prevalence among both adults and the children. Obesity in long term can lead to many diseases including heart attacks, diabetes, osteoarthritis, obstructive sleep apnoea, uncontrolled blood pressure elevation and even some cancers. Obesity may be due to several reasons including genetic disorders, hormonal disorders and excess calorie intake coupled with a sedentary life.

 

A combination of diet restriction, daily exercise and medications are effective in many persons. However, those who have severe obesity will require surgical procedures including gastric banding (bariatric surgery). Bariatric surgery may also almost cure diabetes in these obese persons.

Excess aldosterone level may be caused by enlarged adrenal gland or by a small discrete tumour in adrenal gland. This type of high BP can be completely controlled by proper drugs.
